The University of Alberta is one of the largest medical schools in Canada, with almost 700 students in the 4-year degree program. We have 170 members of the Department of Surgery, and over 1o0 surgery residents. We have active teaching programs in undergraduate and postgraduate education. Over the last 5 years, we have implemented a process of curriculum renewal in surgical education, and we are now regarded as one of the most innovative Departments in the country, with education research projects running in team-based assessment, online education and reflective writing. Our graduating students ranked #1 in the country on the Surgery discipline at the Licensure of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) examination in 2010 and 2011, and were also #1 overall in 2011.
